Underwater Risk of UXO in and around Libyan Ports

There have been reports that ES Sider Port came under heavy bombardment during the fight for freedom from the Gadaffi regime. Es Sider Port is just one of the ports that saw action from ground troops, tanks, fighter aircraft and warships from Gadaffi’s military. This would suggest that Es Sider Port is contaminated with various explosive ordnance and without the assistance of specialist international clearance companies it is impossible to see how insurance companies, such as Lloyds, would be able to insure any shipping activity in the area. The potential risk of a vessel being damaged, by any UXO remaining on the seabed is very real. This could become an environmental disaster if the NTC doesn’t act fast enough to ensure that these areas are first made safe to work in for their staff and subcontractors and secondly, to ensure that the environment is not put at risk in order to speed up production.
